boo!

wow it’s been like, 2 months since i’ve blogged. been getting quite lazy these days, not that i never was, just that i’m even more now! haha

well like what i always say, i don’t know who’s reading anymore cos most people are too busy with work to care anymore. anyways, am most probably gonna watch the NDP preview tomorrow. am super excited haha, esp since it’s at a new venue this year and is supposed to be very pretty with the bay view. and of course, not forgetting the free goodie bag lah! :tongue1

yet on the other hand, it’s made me reflective as well. like, a very year ago, i went to watch the NDP preview as well. and i was super excited cos it was the last one at the National Stadium and i had never been to a NDP before. and a year ago, i was busy preparing for exchange, settling stuff, meeting friends.

now it’s exactly a year later, and it’s quite scary how time flies. i’m still busy meeting up with friends, still busy with packing stuff, except the stuff now is the years of accumulated junk which i must clear before i start work. and now i am the one helping my juniors who are going on exchange to ASB with whatever questions that they have. a year ago i was scared and had so many questions about what i would face. a year later i’m the one supplying all the answers and can even hook my junior up with a belgian friend who stayed at the same hostel that they would stay. a year ago i would never have imagined that i could be that independent, but i’m increasingly beginning to think that i can. the friends that i have made, from exchange and beyond, the 6-degree of friendship thingy is just expanding. ok this doesn’t make sense. never mind. i’m tryin not to say too much here.

and the wanderlust. oh i never thought i would face that. and it would never be satiated.

and now, a year later, we are all going to work. a lot of my friends are already working. so many people have congratulated me on graduation; so many people have asked if i was looking forward to work. :shake: that’s my answer man. haha. who ever looks forward to work? unless i’m a PA to B-rad P-itt or something haha.

so that’s it. one year ago and now. gotta run, will blog again soon i hope! haha

NDP Preview 2006

The law of cause and effect is immediately noticeable when it comes to your body and brain. For example, when you get too little sleep, your mind slows down. Eat better. Get more rest. Read a book.

my horoscope for today! ha this wk is bad lah. and i really hv nt enough slp/rest. and i havent had fruits the whole week!! bad bad bad!! and the book that i wanna read, i can’t get!!!:pout1

anw NDP Preview was fun. well i was really excited about it the night before, and on the day itself as well. and though it was freaking hot to line up to get into the stadium, and freaking hot with the sun shining in my eyes when i got into the stadium. but it was fun. at least, the first half of it was. The emcees were Gurmit Singh, Michelle Chia, Sheik Haikel and Jean Danker. and i was really very impressed with Gurmit. I thought he did a very good job, hosting and tryin to encourage the people in the stadium to participate. And he was running around excitedly around his side of the stadium and I thought that was very commendable cos the other 3 hosts weren’t really runnin. There was those funny games they got us to participate in, like cheering or clapping and then rating us. and of course, the end score would be that both sides of the stadium were even stevens.

there was the parachutes, the aeroplanes and those were really exciting. for all my life, i could only watch on tv or hear the really loud fighter planes blast past my house. but i actually saw them myself that day, just have to tilt my head back, stare up and they were right in my face. so cool to see all the parachutes got nearer and nearer and fly so near above my head.

there was the singing of malay, indian, chinese and english national day songs. then the simulation of the arrival of the mayors and MPs and PM. it was really funny cos the arrival of the mayors and MPs was simulated by some army guy holding up a placard. then the arrival of the PM, wah they actually drove a car into the stadium, and some guy actually stepped out of the car and waved!! hahahahah like how funny lah!! he must be having the time of his life man. then there was the arrival of the GoH for the night, the Minister presiding over the Preview, which was Abdullah Tarmugi. oh aso got the marching of the uniformed troops, performances by school band and wushi performances.

yea aft that, lights out and they had some more performances on the field to signify how Singapore has progressed yada yada. so this was the boring part. cos u cant really see what shape they are forming on the field unless u stare at the big screen, and u cant really tell what the shape signifies unless u stare at the big screen as well. cos basically all the explanations were on the screen. so i stared more at the screen than the field. and all those formations didn’t interest me anyway. so i was bored and wanted to leave but stayed on only bcos of the fireworks.

ya! the fireworks!!:thumbup::thumbup: so good to see them live and so near u!! they were juz right behind me, i just had to turn around or tilt my head up. best part!! then there was the singing of the national anthem, reciting the pledge and singing national day songs. my favourite! :smile1 the ppl ard me not enthu one leh. the kids in front were too young to understand. the guys on my left didn’t seem to care much, only one of them was busy snapping photos with his cool tripod and camera. the ppl behind me were making GL remarks. ya generally no atmosphere leh, so sad. BUT i was the onli one to enthu stand up, wave the flag and sing ok!! and i was deciding whether to put my hand over my heart when reciting the pledge cos no1 was doin it. but the performer on the field directly in front of me did, so i did it too. then i realised the guy beside me glanced over, saw me doin and did it too! haha!! never been more proud of my country than when i was singing the anthem, taking the pledge or singing the national day songs.

yup so..goodie bag was fun. free stuff mah! haha. it was good lah..food and drinks. torchlight and fan. national flag and a stand for u to put the flag on yr table. clappers and discount vouchers. and as Gurmit said, i was one of the privileged few to be able to view the NDP for the last time in the National Stadium!! even if it was only the preview, i’m satisfied, esp since i won’t be here for the actual parade.:tongue1

whee!~

The 9th of August is a holiday
We don’t have to go to school,
we all can play.
I’m dressed in my best,
especially for today!
Hip hip hooray! It’s our National Day!

Today is the birthday of Singapore
We will celebrate this year,
like never before
I don’t know how it started,
but I know it’s true.
Singapore’s a home for me and you.

So we sing!
Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Hip hip hooray! It’s our National Day!

I love this song when I was young, and still do. it’s just so catchy and happy and children-ish. :tongue1 I’m so excited! I’m going to the NDP Preview tomorrow!! all thanks to Mediacorp!! haha i’m like a big fan of Media corp now cos this is the second prize I’ve won in a month! the first prize was from an online contest at their website and I won a $60 Revlon hamper (Lipstick, foundation, nail polish and a notebook haha!) ya so bcos they give me so many prizes, i’m their big fan! haha! :buck1

anw, ya my first time to NDP. and i’m sooo lookin forward to the atmosphere (tryin to ignore the heat and squashy ppl and BO and what not) and the FREE GOODIE BAG!!! whee!~ i love free stuff! haha! and i saw the feature on the packing and moving of the goodie bag on the news just now, and the bag looks quite nice aso leh..hehe..

saw one of my (ex)crushes the other day. didn’t expect that he would turn up for the ‘gathering’. so sad, so long never see him and now he lost weight again! :sad1 my poor baby!! haha and he’s still so nice to me! and gentlemanly!! and i finally got a clear pic of him!! and his MSN too!! wahaha!

help!

i own a Samsung E-100A phone. i have the WAP address of a website. how do I access the WAP website thru my phone? how do i find out whether my phone can access GPRS? pls help very urgent!!!

what to do?

we went for an exchange briefing in school last Thurs, and i was so glad to meet up with Serene cos she has so much information about Aarhus.

firstly, i am very upset to learn that i don’t have a private toilet attached to my hostel room. i thought i would have because students who’ve been there before and stayed near the ghetto have a private toilet. i know i’ve been whining a lot about it, but i just think it’s incredibly troublesome to have to gather your toothbrush/toothpaste/facial wash every morning and every night, and to have to gather all your bathing stuff every day when you bath. that’s a total of 3 trips per day!! and sometimes i can be quite anal about cleanliness, and if i don’t have my own toilet, i won’t know how clean it is and i’ll be really anal about where i put my stuff inside the toilet/bathroom.

secondly, the good thing about our hostel is that it’s where all the international students would be, so it means we can make more friends and interact a lot more. as opposed to the hostel near school, which would be made up mainly of Danish students. it also means that more parties would be held there. BUT the bad thing is that our hostel is near the ghetto. i so don’t dare to post this on LJ cos i didn’t even dare to tell my family (other than my sis, cos they would be so damn worried for me). the ghetto is very famous in Aarhus, because it’s where the second generation immigrants stay. because they are immigrants there, they cannot assimiliate into the society there and there’s a rift between the Danish and them. as such, the immigrants in turn, discriminate against the minority, such as Asian Chinese. which is us. Serene and HL had a run in with them on the bus. The very same bus that we would have to take everyday to get from our hostel to school and back again. how bad is it gonna be? of course we can walk, which is one hour. or cycle, except that YT doesn’t know how to. and of course the basic thing would be to sit near the bus driver and ignore them. but it’s still scary nonetheless. and with the constant parties, it could be hard to study or do homework if i need to do so.

thirdly, the other scary thing is that because it’s near the ghetto, and we’re Asian Chinese, if we were to walk alone, we could get attacked, which was what happened to one of Serene’s friends. apparently her Danish friends didn’t face the same problem. well it could be a coincidental, one-off thing, but it worries me still.

Follow the white rabbit

wheee!!~ anyone noticed anything different?

there’s an additional link on the right column, under Blogroll!! that’s my new blog, in LJ, specially to blog for my exchange and also bcos if i don’t get LJ, i’m never gonna know what’s happening in Evie’s life! haha

anw yea, will still post here and in LJ as well. just that LJ may be more open i think? cos may wanna hand that link out to other friends and family who would be interested in keeping in touch with my activities while i’m overseas. for more details (and my usual whining) on my pre-Denmark term trip, click on the link on the right!!

something stupid

let me tell you smthn stupid. last Fri i was in sch until 11pm!! tryin to book the hostels and trains/planes for my travel trip before sch starts. machiam like rushin project lydat. noone was in sch at such a late hour lor. at least we managed to finish bookin all the stuff for the trip.

anw let me tell u smthn more stupid. while bookin the plane tix online, HY was askin me, “eh last name is our name ah? first name is surname?” i dug out my registration form which stated very plainly that last name is surname but i dunno why i stupidly told her yes. i remembered i was quite tired at that time. i guess most prob it was me, unless i said otherwise and she was the blur one but i doubt. anw by the time we realised the mistake, the bookin was already confirmed. then we started panicking. like what if they are so ngiao and don’t let us board the plane? then sure kns. then i was lookin at the confirmation slip which says that “changes to flight/date/name are subject to a fee” i was like omg. then i saw that changes made within 2 hrs aft the bookin would be free of charge. so i kan cheong spider alrdy. i looked at the confirmation slip and saw the Danish, Norwegian, and i think Swedish numbers on it. so i actually took my HANDPHONE and called the Danish number, seeing as my flight would be departing from Denmark. like i have no f-king idea how much they are gonna charge me, and on a handphone some more. but i was panicking like mad lah!! :noshake:

then the automated voice was speakin in Danish!! like wth. i dunno what she was sayin; i could juz barely make out the “press 1, press 2, press 3” thing. but i couldn’t mk out the options. so u knw normally when u call these hotlines, the last option is normally “press 0 (or sm other number) to speak to the operator”. well it could prolly be different in Denmark, but i just pressed 0. then the woman started talkin dunno wat rubbish again, and i just pressed 0 again. then i got disconnected! haha must be cos i anyhow pressed the wrong button. i think the call took 2 mins max? how much would that cost? :shake:

anw, i just suddenly remembered abt Rob aft i got off the phone; dunno why i didn’t think abt him earlier, i could have saved the money from makin the call!! thank goodness he was online, and i got got him to help me call the Norwegian number. he got it changed in the end, and apparently the operator said there’s no charge for changing names!! :what: anw he was tryin to calm me down while i was frantically tryin to explain the whole mess to him thru MSN and thinkin abt all the horrible scenarios that could happen if we couldn’t change our names. he said it doesn’t really matter becos our names are still the same, just the order is switched but it shldn’t mk much of a difference anw. i was worried that they would be stickler for rules but he said that’s only in Singapore!! :tongue1

anw yea i was just so grateful that he was online at that time; that he was on MSN even while he was at work; that he was free to call for me (even if he had to do it during worktime + thru lunch time cos he had to wait on the line and he got disconnected as well!); that he was willing to help me. i think i would have been worried sick if we couldn’t change it and HY would have killed me if we had to pay extra charges.

i guess i would really have to drop by and see him when i get to Denmark. hope i really can squeeze in the time to visit all the non-major cities where all my friends are. he’s in Stavanger now, shld be heading to Trondheim aft the summer hols. ZH’s friend is in Maastrich in Netherlands; Yvonne would be in Amsterdam. Amsterdam shldnt be a problem – i’m so lookin foward to going there and hopefully meetin up with her! (tho she didn’t sound very enthu abt it haha) YX wld be in Brugge; YL would be in Lund; Isa in Bath. and not forgettin Ig in London! confirm must stop there while he’s there. i just hope i have the money to do so!!

well anw more abt my travel trip next time. feelin quite tired now. :shroom:

Walking Adventures II

well Walkin Adventures I just consisted of me walkin from Bugis to Aljunied bcos i was so darn full aft a hugeass buffet, i felt like walkin and i was wearing track shoes. according to some online website, the walk was only abt 3+ km?? it felt like it was longer!! :turtle:

anw went for Walkin Adventures II today!! went for the Treetop Walk at MacRitchie Reservoir. ok i’m siao lah dun ask me why, i muz hv been delirious when i agreed to go for this. anw it was a double date, so there was company, so it wasn’t so bad. except it’s nt very romantic lah like it was raining this morning and there was squishy mud everywhere. well if you didn’t already know, the HSBC Treetop Walk was built by HSBC for nature recreation and also for forest canopy research. BUT i was so cheated haha. We had to walk a total of about 10km to get to and from the suspension bridge that was the Treetop Walk. The Treetop Walk is only about 200m and we had to walk about 5km from the park to the bridge, and another 5 km out to the carpark again.

bcos it was raining, BC drove us to Thomson Plaza for BK breakfast haha. it was still raining aft we finished eating, but i decided we might as well get on with it since it looked as though it wasn’t going to clear and i wasn’t waking up blardy early on a rainy Sun morning for nothin. so anw we headed for the reservoir and after a while it stopped raining, so it got easier to walk cos we didn’t have to hold umbrellas. the sky was clearer and you could hear all the forest sounds. wow there were people actually running in the forest ok!! gosh they are so enthu!! i can nv be like them man haha. i guess i would have appreciated the hike more if i wasn’t so tired. hell man i’m super unfit still want me to hike uphill downhill for such a long distance?! :cuckoo:

anw the view from the suspension bridge is very very nice!!! but i have a slight phobia of heights lah so the bridge was abit scary as well. cos when u try to look down at the trees beneath, you realise that you’re actually 200m above ground!! there were other spots along the way that were very nice as well, like this tower, about 5 storeys high, that we climbed to the top and could see a long distance away. but nobody brought cameras so no pics :sad1 anw i looked like hell so i refused to use SV’s hp camera to tk pics.

maybe bcos it was raining so there weren’t many animals out and about. quite sad to see those signboards along the way describing the wildlife and stuff but when i peered at the foliage, i cannot see anything. :sad1 either we were too noisy or it was raining so they were all sleeping or smthn haha. ok lah, let’s see now, i saw birds, butterflies, moths, one spider (wondered if it was alive or dead cos it was hanging from the branch with all its eight legs folded/dangling beneath it). ya dat’s it man haha. so sad leh..i nv see any pangolin, or terrapin or fishes. :pout1

aft tt we went to Shunfu Mart for lunch. hm i was hungry but i couldn’t find anythin nice to eat? mebbe over hungry? cos i was already hungry when we started the walk!!! haha but i refused to eat the pau in my bag bcos that was my emergency ration – in case we got lost in the jungle and got no food to eat!!!! hahahahhaha! oh but there’s this nice cake stall there called “Chocolat n Spice”. It was reviewed in the papers before i think, cos i saw the news clippings at the stall, but i don’t rem reading abt it. Anw the aroma of baked choc was in the air, and you can smell it everytime u walk past the stall. There was also a long queue in front of the stall. So aft lunch we went to pack some home. It’s not exactly excellent, but it still retains its chocolate aroma up till now and the taste is not bad too. but i’m nt likely to go there ever again lah..esp if i’m nt gg on this walk anymore!!

eh my legs are killin me now but at least i had fun. though it’s not something i would go through again. this is the kinda thing i would go once just to have fun, and know that at least i’ve been there and made it through. kinda like AFA u knw? hahaha. the walkin torture is one thing; i guess i just don’t appreciate forests all that much? if it was mountains and seas mebbe lah. when i came home the birds chirpin and the green tree outside my house made me panic a little. :what: haha but it was good cos i managed to come up with one poem haha. haven’t been writing for so darn long, ever since jc? cos school work is just so busy. everytime i have the inspiration to write, i don’t have the time or the ‘feeling’ to sit down and do so. but this walk enabled me to come up with something. if i feel like it, may wanna try and write some more later, just to capture what I was feeling on the way. well may be going for the Canopy Walk soon (i think that’s what it’s called!) – i only hope it doesn’t rain the next time!!!

Salad Days

A time of youth, innocence, and inexperience: “my salad days,/When I was green in judgment, cold in blood” (Shakespeare).

it’s been a fantastic week. can you imagine just waking up, lookin at the time, realise that you have nothin on for the day, nothing to do, so either you just laze in bed or crawl up to pick a book and read it in bed. or wake up, realise that it’s raining, tk the pillow cover your face and snuggle under the blanket for more sleep. haha absolut shiokness. i shld market the local singaporean version of absolut vodka haha!!! my own time to plan what i want to do as i please, anything at any time without the overwhelming spectre of work or school; to just do anything without feeling guilty. gosh it’s damn shiok, nv felt this way ever in my life.

A break-down

ok so for the benefit of my dear jie-mei, here goes! :umm1

AT –> Accounting Theory. a module that aims to teach you the theories of Accting (duhz) supposedly will give you a view of Accting at 30,000 feet up in the air. like why do we account for something in a certain way and the advantages and criticisms of this particular way.

QM –> Quantitative Methods. a module that teaches you various methods to solve different problems in our lives. most problems can be solved using a QM method.

For example probability (to calculate expected value to help you make a decision whether to do something), queuing (to calculate various figures like the average time of queuing and how to reduce this time and by how much can you reduce), inventory (to calculate when you should start ordering new stock, how much to order each time, whether the discount from your supplier is worth it), transportation (to calculate how much each of your production centres should produce/supply to meet a particular demand from your retail outlets), PERT (to calculate the shortest amt of time you would need to complete one project that involves many activities/steps and to know whether there are any activities/steps that you must confirm finish on time or you would delay the whole project), Games Theory (to calculate which is the best strategy you should take assuming you have the various payoffs), Network (to calculate what is the shortest route to tk from one place to another or to calculate what is the minimum length
of material you need to connect various nodes).

quite a fun module lah, cos a lot of these methods can be applied to real life, but it involves so much calculations and i’m not a numbers person!!

AFA –> Advanced Financial Accounting. a module that is a pain in the ass. ’nuff said. hahaha!

it’s supposed to teach us accountants how to consolidate financial statements, for example you are the ‘parent’ company and you buy a >50% share in another company, which will be known as your subsidiary. so when you present the financial results of your company, something like telling your shareholders or investors how well you have performed for the past year, you must also include the results of your subsidiary. so AFA is supposed to teach you how to include the results. AFA also teaches you alot of other irritating things which nobody should bother to learn unless u’re gonna be an accountant or top notch auditor. which i’m nt gg to be haha!
